The 8 Fixes (Step-by-Step)
Fix 1 — Verify Charger, Wattage & Wall Power
- Use the right wattage. Many 15–17″ laptops need 90–130W (or more). A 45–65W adapter may power the system but not charge the battery while you work.
- By brand:
Dell commonly 65/90/130/180/240/330W;
HP has Blue Tip / 4.5×3.0 Smart Pin barrels and USB-C PD options;
Lenovo has Slim Tip barrels and USB-C PD. - Try another wall outlet (bypass power strips/UPS). Inspect the adapter LED and listen for coil whine or crackling (signs of failure).

Fix 2 — USB-C PD: Cable & Port Reality Check
- Use an e-marked cable for 100W+ PD. Data-only or non-e-marked cables can block high-watt charging.

Lenovo

Dell
- MyDell / Dell Power Manager → Battery settings
- “Primarily AC Use”/“Adaptive” can hold charge below 100%.
HP
- BIOS → Battery Health Manager
- “Maximize My Battery Health” can cap charge near 80%.

Fix 4 — Battery Disconnect & EC (Embedded Controller) Reset
- Power off and unplug AC.
- On models with a BIOS “Disable/Disconnect Battery” option: enable it, then shut down.
- Alternatively, for systems with an internal battery switch/pinhole: follow the vendor’s instructions to cut battery power.
- Hold the power button for 30 seconds to discharge residual power (EC reset).
